The Tanguero Workshop brings together students and renowned Argentine Tango professionals from around the globe for an immersive educational experience in the heart of Urbana, IL.

ELIGIBILITY

Open to adults and youth AGE 12 & UP on Bandoneón, and Strings - Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass.

The Tanguero Workshop has a place for all levels and genres of musicians. Seasoned tangueros come to share ideas with others from around the globe, to get access to unique tango resources, and to play and study with tango maestros. Those newer to tango are introduced to a multifaceted tango experience, learning solid idiomatic tango technique for their instrument, and participating in different elements of tango culture in a supportive, community environment. All attendees, amateur to professional, are matched with people of similar levels. Although we do not require a formal audition to be accepted to this workshop, newcomers are asked to submit a sample of playing in video made within a year so that we can assign you the right materials.

LOCATION

The workshop takes place in historic downtown Urbana, Illinois. Our main facility will be the Community Center for the Arts, 202 W Main St, Urbana, IL 61801. In walking distance are restaurants, cafés, and entertainment venues.

WHAT IS TANGUERO?

“Tanguero” refers to both tango professionals and people who are passionate about any part of tango culture, including history, music, dance, lyrics, theater. If any of these aspects describe how you feel about tango, or if you are interested in learning, this workshop is for you!

Tuition: Early Bird Discount $650 (12/20 to 3/1/24). Mid-Bird Discount $800 (3/1 to 5/1/24). Regular Price $950 (5/1 to 6/1/24)

** Refund policy: Full Refund (minus fees) until Feb 14, 2024; 25% (minus fees) until May 15, 2024; no refunds after May 15, 2024. Credit can be applied to TSW 2024 if desired.

BMI - Central Illinois Regional Airport (Bloomington, IL - 45 minutes from CU)
PIA - Peoria International Airport (Peoria, IL - 1 hour 30 minutes from CU)
IND - Indianapolis International Airport (Indianapolis, IN - 2 hours from CU) please note IND is EST, Champaign-Urbana is CST
MDW - Chicago Midway International Airport (Chicago, IL - 2 hours 30 minutes from CU)
ORD - O’Hare International Airport (Chicago, IL - 2 hours 30 minutes from CU)
STL - St. Louis Lambert International Airport (St. Louis, MO - 2 hours 45 minutes from CU)
Greyhound is available on a limited basis from Indianapolis, Chicago, and St. Louis.
Amtrak is available from Chicago O’Hare; requires CTA transit from airport to Union station.
Peoria Charter bus is available from Chicago O’Hare and Midway.
Rental cars are available at all airports.

HOUSING AND IN-CITY TRANSPORTATION

Champaign-Urbana has many hotel and Airbnb options. The public transit system (MTD) is accessible in many parts of town, as are Lyft and Uber. If you have questions about housing and/or travel options, please contact amanda.m.ramey@gmail.com.

COVID-19 SAFETY POLICIES

All workshop faculty and participants are required to show proof of up-to-date vaccination for their country of origin upon arrival at the workshop. TSW will follow current CDC and IDPH guidelines for safety and quarantine. In addition, faculty and participants may be required to take a COVID-19 test prior to or during the workshop.
